Have Questions?

  • How long do I wear my temporary crown?

A temporary crown is usually on for 2-3 weeks and must be delicately taken care of.

  • How much does a dental crown cost?

A dental crown is usually between $1,600-$2,000 depending on the extent of the procedure and a patient's insurance plan.

  • Crowns vs. filling?

Both are types of dental restorations used to treat decayed or damaged teeth but differ in their scope and application. A dental filling is typically used to treat small to moderate cavities that only affect a portion of the tooth and a dental crown is for a larger restoration that is used to cover and protect damaged or weakened tooth.

  • Crowns vs. a veneer?

A crown covers the tooth in its entirety, whereas a veneer is more like a contact lens for the tooth. The decision on to use a crown vs a veneer depends on the specific situation of the patient.

  • How long will my crown last?

Usually anywhere from 5-20 years. The lifespan is multifactorial and depends on the type of material used, the location of the crown in your mouth, oral hygiene habits, and the amount of wear and tear.

  • How many appointments will it take?

The process of getting a dental crown typically involves two appointments and is done by preparing the tooth by removing any decay or damage and shaping it to accommodate the crown. An impression is then taken of the prepared tooth and sent to a dental laboratory where the crown is fabricated. Once the crown is ready, it is cemented onto the tooth, restoring its function and appearance.

  • Will my crown look natural?

Yes, the crown will be the ideal shape of that specific tooth in your mouth, and the shade will match the other teeth in your mouth to make it appear as if the tooth is a natural tooth rather than a crown.

  • How is a crown placed?

A crown is placed by removing the temporary crown, fitting in the final crown, and checking all the parameters of the crown including the contacts, contours, and esthetics of the crown. If everything looks perfect, the crown will be cemented or bonded on with permanent dental material.

  • Can I floss with a crown?
Yes, you can floss with a crown on both sides.
  • How do I know if I need a crown?
If you have missing tooth structure, decay, trauma, or esthetic concerns, a crown could be good for you.
  • When is a particular patient a good candidate?
Dental crowns are commonly used for a patient to repair teeth that have been damaged by decay, trauma, or other factors that have caused the tooth to become weakened or fractured. The crown helps to strengthen the tooth and restore its function, shape, and appearance.
  • What is a dental crown and why is it the best option?
A dental crown is a type of dental restoration that is used to cover or cap a damaged or weakened tooth. It is typically made of porcelain, ceramic, metal, or a combination of these materials and is custom-made to fit over the affected tooth.

The Dental Crown Procedure at Boutique for Cosmetic Dentistry

First, we will conduct an initial consultation. Our team will assess your dental health and candidacy for a dental crown. Then, we will explain your treatment steps and address questions or concerns.

If a dental crown is right for you, we will prepare the affected tooth by removing decay and damage and shaping it. After, we will take impressions that allow us to customize a crown to fit your smile. We will also place a temporary crown.

Finally, we will remove the temporary crown and place the permanent one. This involves checking all the crown parameters, including the contacts, contours, and aesthetics. If everything looks perfect, we will cement or bond it with permanent dental material.

Generally, the above steps happen over the course of two appointments. Getting a crown is not painful, as we numb the target tooth and surrounding gum tissue. Additional sedation options are available.

Who Is a Good Candidate for a Dental Crown?

You may be a good candidate for a dental crown if you have:

  • One or more teeth that are significantly damaged, decayed, fractured, or worn
  • Undergone root canal therapy
  • Teeth with large fillings that compromise a substantial portion of their structure
  • Discolored, stained, misshapen, or misaligned teeth
  • Ongoing tooth sensitivity, pain when chewing, or related discomforts
  • Stable oral health, free from gum disease or decay that would undermine the success of a crown
